Squad: Gideon Lax (captain), David Torr, George Tykocki, Elliot Lowen, Joe Derrick, Josh Perrett, Sam Jones, Eddie White, Lucas Cameron, Jack Cameron, Alistair Clapp, Harvey White
This game was a first chance for the team to play a match together for a full 60 minutes with the offside rule being applied. Milford were unable to field 11 players, so 10 a side was agreed.
From the kick off Ringwood broke quickly and Harvey White scored with a skilful run and finish. A dream start and one that brought smiles to all concerned! Milford pressured our defence for rest of the half, often bypassing our midfield with either long balls or quick passing and moving. Gideon, George and Alistair were outstanding with some neat interceptions to save the day. David, who was pressed into playing in goal at short notice, pulled off some good saves, but was powerless to stop Milford equalizing near the end of the half when Ringwood were caught napping and for once failed to mark properly.
Half time was a chance for the team to catch their breaths and a few were surprised at the energy needed to cover a larger pitch for the first time. Jack and Elliot came on for Josh and Alistair in midfield and defence respectively, with Lucas dropping into a 5-man midfield, leaving Harvey as the lone striker. This quickly paid dividends, stemming the flow through Ringwood’s often overworked midfield, and leading to Harvey breaking again and applying another expert finish.
Ringwood’s superior fitness now started to become evident with them dominating the game and pressuring Milford from all parts of the field. Eddie was making a number of good runs, and allied with Gideon’s quick throws Milford started conceding a number of corners. Only a combination of good luck and some poor finishing kept the scores the same, as Ringwood piled forward. However, such dominance, particularly in midfield with Sam, Josh and Joe starting to assert themselves, led to the inevitable goals. A scrappy exchange in the six yard box led to Josh bundling the ball over the line, and another outstanding run and finish from Harvey completed the scoring. A well deserved hat trick. When the whistle blew Ringwood were still looking for a fifth goal, but everybody was happy with a 4-1 result.
All in all a good performance, but coming to terms with offside both in defence and attack needs some further work! Many thanks to Milford for providing a good test, to the help of the parents in setting up the pitch, Ian White for running a line and to William Cameron for refereeing at short notice.
